How to Make Your Own Garlic Powder

We love garlic at our house and try to grow enough for the whole year on our tiny piece of land in the city. There’s a time of the year, though, in late spring and early summer, when our garlic braids get itchy, and they wanna sprout.

Once it starts to sprout, it’s freshness withers, and it’s more difficult to preserve. This makes it the perfect time to turn it into garlic powder! We put garlic powder into almost everything, and it’s a great cost savings to not have to buy it at the store anymore.

Here’s How To Make It!

Peel the garlic, and rinse and dry it if needed.

Slice it. The batch in this post is pretty thick, and you could definitely slice it thinner to save time in the dehydrator. If you have a food processor, that will slice it super thin in a jiffy!

For thick chunks like this we dehydrate it for 20 hours at 140 degrees.

Dehydrating times vary vastly! Try experimenting and see what your manual recommends, too. If you’re in the market for a dehydrator, this is the one we have, and it does great! Here is an affiliate link. https://amzn.to/3TRiCRW As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Once your garlic is dried out, remove it from the dehydrator, and put it in a food bullet, blender, food processor, or spice grinder, preferably something you can wash, since garlic is so strong! I use the Ninja and love it! Here is an affiliate link. https://amzn.to/3wPQmE1 As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. The blender and food processor parts are just so so, but the to go cups (seen here) are awesome! This garlic became powder in seconds!

Grind it up until powdery and store it in clean dry jars. Keep your jars in a cool, dark place, like a cupboard. Use it up until it’s gone!

Here’s How To Use It!

Garlic powder is truly good on almost anything, especially in soup, pasta, potatoes, and salad dressings. My hubby puts it on his grilled cheese, too, which always smells incredible.

What do you put garlic powder on? Use this homemade garlic in the same way you would use the kind from the store. Put it on whatever makes your heart happy!

Of course, you don’t need to wait till your garlic starts sprouting to try this, and you don’t even have to grow your own. Grocery store garlic works just fine, too. But if you find your garlic sprouting, or you have extra garlic, or you just feel like it, try this out, and see what you think! If you do, let me know, I’d love to hear about it.
