A Casual Garden Stroll in June

Come on in, and join me for a casual garden stroll in June. Today’s post is just about meandering aimlessly through the garden.

A garden is more than just a workhorse. Of course you work hard out there, and it works hard, too. It provides you with food and medicine and beauty. But a garden is also a refuge, a casual place to tread in bare feet. It’s a place to drink champagne and listen to old time music. Go there to throw off your boots, talk to bugs, and gaze out in wonder at every day miracles.

I log a lot of hours working in my garden, but I also log a lot of lounging time. One of my favorite things to do is to just wander aimlessly around and ponder at all the beautiful little mysteries of the universe. You’ll also often find me out lazing about on my porch, gazing out at the garden.

Today’s post is a casual stroll around my garden, my happy place.

The Garden in June

In June, you start to enjoy some of the fruits of your labor. I have a few peas that I will mostly munch on outside, but maybe a few will end up in my kitchen, too.

Cilantro has ripened into coriander, and many herbs are in full and spectacular bloom.

The Dahlias, though not blooming yet, are majestic and happy, getting ready to show themselves to the world. Hydrangeas are just starting to get their first blush of color. The Lillies are a strong, bright, and cheerful gold.

The Tulips, Peonies, and Irises are all done until next year, but the Roses are still going full tilt. My favorite flower in bloom right now is definitely the show stopping Calla Lily.

Raspberries and strawberries are ripe, and blueberries will come in soon, along with the cherries, gooseberries, gojis, and currants.

My salad greens are starting to fade away as the summer heat approaches, but some flowering arugula, fresh baby kale, and big heads of Romaine carry on.

The Dijon mustard is huge and trampling everything nearby as its seeds grow and ripen in its pods. Only a few pops of happy yellow flowers remain.

More Garden Strolling….

The herbs are filling in everywhere, the Borage is starting to wane, and soon it will be time to plant Basil.

Onions will be ready to harvest in a few months, and are beginning to get crowded in my little raised beds. Garlic will come out soon to be cured and saved to use throughout the year. This harvest will open up space to plant my fall garden.

Celery is in bloom and making seeds, and my tomatoes, while happy and lush, have yet to start to fruit. The peppers are still a little grumpy from our Juneuary rains.

Strong heads of artichoke stand proud, and what’s left of the asparagus has started to bloom.

Tiny apples, plums, figs, olives, and pears hang from strong branches, and the cherries, while ripe and beautiful, are also filled with critters that have kind of ruined the experience!

These tiny moments in the garden can truly turn your whole day around. It’s nice to stop, lounge, and appreciate everything that’s growing and changing all around you.
