You can grow your own garden and preserve your harvests in the city.

Here’s How.

Hi, I’m Carly, and I want to help you grow.

We often think we need to have land out in the country to be more sustainable and independent. But that’s not true. We can start where we are–right here and now.

I grow all kinds of plants in my small urban garden. Cooking and preserving what I grow saves money, provides healthy meals and medicines for my family, brings me closer to my community, makes me stronger, and inspires joy. The same can be true for you, and I’m here to show you how.

The Little Green Shoot

The Little Green Shoot, your guide to urban homesteading, is a place to connect about gardening, cooking, preserving, and living a healthy lifestyle in the city. So many of us are wanting to play a more active role in our food production and make choices that are more healthy for ourselves, our communities, and the world. This little corner of the internet will help you learn how to plan and design your own urban garden or homestead.

There are so many fun options for saving space in the urban garden! Try raised beds, growing vertically, growing smaller varieties, growing only what you truly love, and finding creative ways to sneak in gardens to unlikely spaces. Check out this article for more ideas on small space gardening, and while you’re at it, here are 10 Essential Things To Do Before You Plan Your Garden. Looking for a simple guide to creating your own garden space anytime of year? The Beginning Gardener’s Toolbox is an in depth step by step guide to get you started.

Once you find success as a gardener, you may find your abundance overwhelming. Check out my Free Guide to Urban Homesteading for ideas to share and preserve your bounty. I also have helpful blog posts for preserving herbs. Check those out here: Drying Herbs and Making Your Own Garlic Powder.

I am so happy to welcome you into this community! Please let me know if there’s anything you’d like to learn about. Also, make sure to pop on over to Instagram where I post all kinds of content on the regular. You can also find me on Tiktok, Facebook and Pinterest
