Siskiyou Seeds: A wonderful source for unique, sustainable, and fun to grow plants.

Seed Savers: An excellent source for unique, heirloom varieties.

Baker Creek: Great selection of unusual seeds.

Botanical Interests: Quality seed with many varieties.

MIgardener: Healthy, quality seed from quality people! Very affordable seeds.

Azure Standard is a favorite of mine! (This one is an affiliate, because I am a super fan! See below for more info.) Besides just seeds you can also order very healthy plants, and even groceries here. Great company!

Garden Supplies

Pergola: This is what I use for growing grapes!

Orchard Rack: This is the one I use for onion storage. I love it!

Soil Test: Inexpensive and helpful to see what’s going on with your soil!

Grow Lights: Essential if you are starting seeds indoors, especially in colder climates.

Garden Tools

Rake: I love this rake because it can adjust to large or small areas, and can work on soft or tougher material.

Gloves: I don’t have a specific pair to recommend here, just be careful. Many garden gloves come with cancer warnings. I prefer the kind that are breathable fabric on top, and a tougher coating on the palms. Look for natural or bamboo materials, if you can.

Watering Wands: Even if you have irrigation, there will always be hand watering to do, and the right wand is key. I love this one! It is durable, efficient, and easy to use.

Harvest Baskets: I love these baskets. They are great for harvesting, as well as lugging around just about anything. There are lots of different styles and colors. Hods and regular baskets are wonderful, as well.

Dibber: This is an excellent tool for planting onions, seeds, and other plants. It shows you exactly how deep you are planting, and also helps with spacing.

Natural Born Killers

Here are some natural deterrents to pests.

Captain Jack’s Insecticidal Super Soap: Insecticidal Super Soap controls species of ant, aphid, borer, caterpillar, spider mite, cricket, chinch bug, weevil, white fly, thrip, & more.

Captain Jack’s Dead Bug Brew: This pest control is great for use on bagworms, borers, beetles, caterpillars, codling moth, gypsy moth, spider mites, loopers, leaf miners, tent caterpillars, thrips and more.

Diatomaceous Earth: This is a natural powder made of tiny, fossilized, aquatic organisms. It is harmless for people, but very sharp, dehydrating, and deadly for insects. Be sure to buy the food grade kind.

Fertilizers

Here are some organic fertilizers to help your plants grow.

Dr. Earth Organic 5 Tomato, Vegetable & Herb Fertilizer: Home Grown fertilizer is formulated to feed vegetable gardens, summer and winter crops, container plantings or native backyard soil. Use it during initial planting of seeds, transplanting, and on a regular basis as a top dressing or compost tea.

Bat Guano: The brand I use is Dr. Earth. You can find it at your local nursery or here *This is a popular item that usually sells out. Here is an alternate brand

In The Kitchen

Nut Milk Bag: Great for straining homemade stock

Food Dehydrator: A must for preserving fruit, vegetables, and herbs on your urban homestead!

Tea Infuser Mugs

I love a good nightly cup of tea, and since I use mostly plants from my garden, infuser mugs work great for me. Here are a few I really enjoy. Click the links below if you’d like to try them out!

Tea Infuser Mug: A fun, cozy tea mug that comes with a built in infuser and lid.

Tea Forte Infuser Cup: Another great built in infuser mug.

Stainless Steel Tea Infuser: These are great because you can use them in any regular mug.

Azure Standard

I love this source and place an order every month. This is a family company that offers premium products at reasonable prices. They often tell about the farmers who provide the food, as well. This is the best source I’ve found for organic gluten free oat flour, and I buy it in bulk all the time for my baking.

Friends

One of the best things about being in the digital space is all the amazing people I get to meet. Some of them even have their own wonderful gifts to offer. Below I’ve shared some that I think may benefit you.

Chickens

You may have noticed my urban homestead is pretty plant based, but I know lots of people are also looking to raise chickens. So I wanted to introduce you to my favorite “Chicken Lady,” Heather Levin, of The Greenest Acre.

The Greenest Acre: If you’re in our facebook group, I may have already introduced you to Heather. She is my go to gal for all things Chickens! You can check out her amazing offerings here. I would also highly recommend getting on her mailing list, because her emails are a gold mine of free information.

Preparedness

I know many people are looking to get into homesteading for security reasons, and are looking to be better prepared for anything that may arise. I have two wonderful friends to help in this area.

Half Moon Ridge: Rachael is a master of teaching how to have a well stocked home and pantry for whatever needs may arise. Her warm, organized teaching style is such a breath of fresh air. She has truly thought of everything! Go check her out if you are looking to create a well stocked pantry, a well prepared home, or are ready to take a journey to self reliance.

Practical Prep Club: Speaking of being prepared, Mrs. B is the queen of preparedness! My dear friend, Gail Brisco, is one of the kindest people you could hope to meet, and has so many quick, easy to understand plans for natural disasters and other unforeseen emergency situations. If you are looking to get prepared in any area of the world, I would highly recommend checking her out.

Flair

Sometimes ya just wanna look pretty. My friend Jenelle has got you covered on that! Check her out for custom designed enamel garden pins (I am the proud owner of the Bok Choy). But don’t stop there, definitely check out her insta for loads of urban homesteading tips. My favorite is her generous urban farmstand and getting glimpses into her gorgeous art.

A set of vegetable enamel pins made by custom artist and urban homesteader, Jenelle Nowak, of Parsnips & Poppies, pinned to blue denim coveralls.

Parsnips & Poppies: Jenelle is the founder of Parsnips & Poppies. She creates beautiful enamel pins, based on her custom paintings that feature and celebrate different foods from the garden.
